The ‘Sandpit’ is a unique 230ha site near Greyton, connecting the mountains and alluvial plains to the river system, with a wide diversity of habitats. Species and water systems are threatened by the invasives that until recently were spreading rapidly through the site. The area supports multiple community livelihoods – such as animal grazing, woodcutting and sustainable harvesting – and recreational activities – including mountain biking, running and swimming. We have been supporting restoration of biodiversity in the Sandpit since 2023 and have so far exceeded our initial clearing targets for the site.
Working closely with Greyton Conservation Society, Wild Restoration works with an experienced local team to clear prioritised areas of the Sandpit. We also collaborate with Zonderend Water Users Association to clear along the river. Donations to help fund the local team are very welcome.
